Take a small screwdriver and pry out the clips on the back of the ball seat at the top and bottom of the old gas strut/jack. The lid is very heavy. Lifting the back cover makes it easier to remove the old ones. Also prepare some lubricant to put on the ball before replacing it with a new one. New ones are simply inserted with clips.
