Whenever the tread wears down to half, you should replace the tire to ensure a safe trip. Water and snow build up on the contact patch because between the checkers on the edges of the rubber is a side that is half the height of the new tread, and at 50% wear this side becomes on par with the main tread and starts to block the removal of water and snow. That's why I flew into the oncoming lane at 50 miles per hour (thankfully empty) the second time I made a tiny 20-degree turn in wet porridge, and once when I taxied the wheel on the kerb at 30 miles per hour. Similar tread wear to hack 7 was found on the second vehicle, and it was driven through the same muck on the same days I was driving at significantly faster speeds (as if on rails). Remember it while you make your decision.
