Use it for a kayak. First, use the Malone loader to load the kayak. Be sure to read both reviews if you're buying the same combo

Works great I usually put it right on the roof without using metal railings. However, it presses on the roof if you overtighten. However, my kayak is light and the off-road roof seems solid enough. You can mount it on a metal track with a groove, but I didn't try because the shape of the groove was different than the track on my SUV.
