Never fully closed so air kept getting in. Then, just with normal use (never put it in the washing machine (hand wash only) and never drop it), the bottom started cracking after about 7 months. Regardless of anything, if water gets into the pen it will leak from day 1, which made no sense in having a pen for water to get in. No water penetrates into the closed handle. After about 9 months the crack started to leak so I just planted it on a towel (my denial phase). Month 10 is over :-(. I grew up with Brita so I was sad to see it. When I bought it the reviews weren't great but I liked the design and was hoping for the best. Don't make what I do I did. Don't buy this product for the looks. Recommendation: - Brita Extra Large 18 Cup Filtered Water Dispenser with 1 Standard Filter, BPA Free, UltraMax, Black (I grew up with it so I just bought one of these)- or Brita Standard Everyday Water Filter Jug White Large 10 Cups Pack of 1 (ours lasted about 10 years)
