You add two unformatted blank hard drives, connect them to (wired) ethernet, set them up and you have your own NAS. You can then use it to store backups of data or share and stream pictures, music and videos to all devices connected to your network including my Dish Network TV. Plus, it offers the ability to access it from outside your network via the NETGEAR cloud service once you've set up your account. The instructions are clear enough to install the required hard drives and set up the device and your access to the cloud. pretty clear but clear enough and if you go online on Netgear they have additional data and instructions. In fact, I recommend going online to Netgear before ordering this unit so you have a better idea of what you're getting and some hard drive considerations. For this application, you really need high-reliability hard drives. Typically, the device is configured to provide full redundancy between two hard drives. You have one hard drive to store your data, but if one of the drives fails, all your data is safe and you simply replace the failed hard drive. You don't need to be an IT expert to do what is required, but you do need to know the basics of Ethernet computer networking. Good network storage for the price. I would give 5 stars if the documentation in the box was more complete.
