At first I was afraid of getting too much power and overheating my Rosie Burks (birds the size of a parrot). When this lamp arrived and I put it in a 6 inch reflector dome (from Home Depot) I was afraid it wouldn't be enough. I placed the perch just below the heat lamp 11 inches from it and the birds loved it! They quickly discovered that this is the warmest spot in the flight cage (the glass front of the cage helps retain heat better in winter), and they visit during the day and sleep underneath whenever they choose. There are other perches nearby that they can switch to if they get too hot and still get some warmth. This heat lamp is safe for birds as it does not emit any light that can burn their eyes. It's also more energy efficient than the portable space heater that was placed next to her cage to keep her warm in the winter when the house gets cooler. If you have a cage with more airflow or a very large cage, you may need the next larger size for heating. Always make sure it has options for how close to sit next to or under a heat lamp so it doesn't overheat.
