Review on High-Performance Makita GV5010 5 Disc Sander: Perfect Finishing Solution by Roger King

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great grinder, light and powerful

Great grinder, light and powerful. I thought the lack of variable speed might make a difference, but it doesn't. Simply vary the pressure you apply to the workpiece. I have 5" and 7" sanders and a random orbit sander. Grinders are great for removing heavy stock but lack control for finishing. The random orbit sander is ideal for light surfaces such as wood or varnished/sealed wood. But I'm restoring a fiberglass boat and need something that will remove the hard surface and still maintain control without scratching the finish. Here it is, highly recommended. There have been some complaints about the price of Makita sanding discs, but they are cheaper than the sanding discs I use and I considered getting a velcro disc attachment, but the included plastic disc works well. I'll see if I can modify the other sanding pad discs to fit the wheel when I run out of the pads I bought.

Pros
  • Spiral bevel gears for smoother rotation and more efficient power transmission
Cons
  • Requires socket
