No Loss, But Also No Gain

I got this headphone amplifier to connect it to a USB-microphone my daughter is using for distant learning. The microphone has its own headphone jack. That works, but when the cable moves the microphone picks it up. So now the headphone is plugged to the amplifier, which is velcroed (is that a word?) to the table. Problem solved. It doesn’t sound much different. The gain switch increases the input signal, so it sounds louder, but not better. I leave it off, since we are only recording voice, I rather keep the signal untouched. The quality is good for such a cheap unit ($25 in September 2020). It’s a mass-produced generic design offered by various Chinese brands. The case is a cut aluminum profile with all internals on one board slided in. Fun fact: It’s almost exact the same size as a iPod mini.Personally, I don’t really see the point of a portable headphone amplifier. I tested it with my heaviest headphones on various devices, and I didn’t feel I need more volume than already delivered. If someone is running some special vintage equipment, then certainly not a $25 USB-powered digital mini-amp. But if you have a need for this product, then there is nothing wrong with it. Even the included cables are decent. One is a short patch when the input device is close. The longer is the one I use with the mic. I’m happy with it. I found one of my cellphone holders works perfect with it on the desk. The quality is amazing for the price, if we all agree that Hi-fi isn’t happening in this category. But the sound is forwarded good enough that it doesn’t make me cringe.I hope this helps to make a decision. If so please let me know by hitting the button below.
