Used three times Sand glued once

I like the wooden surface and the light markings and the white sand inside because I like to sit in the sauna at night. However, I have only used this hourglass about three times and so far the sand has stuck once. Why go to great lengths to make an hourglass out of sand when the sand will get stuck and stop working? I hope this doesn't happen again, but my intuition says it will.
