You can't be too picky about electronics these days. Gone are the days when big brands really mattered. In the old days, buying Magnavox meant something. In this case, I believe it still is. Seven or eight years ago I bought a Magnavox standalone DVD recorder from Walmart. I've recorded tons of DVDs on it, probably 100 literally, and I've recorded 1000 hours of playback on it. It got dusty when my son accidentally spilled water on it. A DVD player is a must in this home! I had no intention of buying a VCR with it. I already have an LG DVD/VCR combo (one of the smaller products they make) and just decided to use S-Video for the new LG set. I'm not impressed with the LG's menu and refuse to use it for dubbing. Unfortunately the model I had was no longer available except in refurbished units and I want a new one. It arrived yesterday and I wasted no time connecting it to my 55 inch LG LED TV. My first attempt was with the first season of the Barnaby Jones DVD. To be a 1970's show it looks VERY crystal clear like it was filmed yesterday. Even some of The Beverly Hillbillies' old homemade DVDs that were on VHS and transferred to DVD looked better than before. 80's so there's a certain level of quality to start with. However, this device appears to upconvert the VHS signal to at least half resolution. Obviously it's not as sharp as the HD remaster, but it's not. Poorly. Even copying at the lowest possible speed does not lead to any significant losses in quality. The menus are easy to use and no different from my previous device. Sometimes the changes are good, but sometimes it's not worth ruining the perfection. Luckily Magnavox didn't ruin the perfection! You want to transfer your old VHS tapes to DVD!
