Review on πŸ”Œ D-Link DWA-125: Fast and Reliable Wireless N-150 Mbps USB Wi-Fi Adapter by Aaron Gonzales

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent 150Mbps Dongle

I was a little hesitant to buy this product at first after reading a review here about the DWA-125 having issues with XP like all my other Vista computers/ Laptops or Win 7 already have 802.11n capabilities built in. The only reason for this dongle is to use it with an old laptop running Windows XP SP2, which I saved as my "XP" computer (I have some old software that I still use sometimes, but it hasn't been upgraded to Vista or Win ported 7); but I decided to give it a try anyway and I'm glad I did. The installation process was very smooth on my XP SP2 laptop and works perfectly with the SMC n Wireless Access Point (SMCWBR14S-N4, also purchased from Revain). With n-only mode set, running the speed tests on the dslreports site shows that the DWA-125/SMC combo is actually faster than my wired Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) connections (like it should be). It runs at 135Mbps when it's across the wall from the router/AP and oscillates between 108Mbps and 135Mbps when it's two rooms up and one floor down from the router/AP. access is. Although the DWA-125 only supports speeds up to 150Mbps, it won't hinder my home network as it's already faster (test results confirm this) than my wired ethernet connections. For the price I paid ([.] with free shipping) and the fact that it comes with a USB extension cable/charging station, this is a great buy! Note: A USB extension cable/USB charging station may not be as useful for laptop applications, but if you're buying a wireless device, if your desktop or media player dongle is in a closet/shelf full of other A/V components requires an extension cord /cradle may come in handy. Desktop computers and many home audio/video devices such as AVRs or DVD/Blu-Ray players are made of sheet metal to absorb and prevent interference from electromagnetic signals. So if you have a dongle in one of the USB ports on the back of your desktop computer, or if the dongle is under a piece of video/audio hardware, reception will be poor simply because the sheet metal "blocks" . "Most RF signals. An extension cord/stand allows you to place the dongle where its reception/transmission is not blocked by a computer or audio/video equipment.
