Many testers of this product initially claim that the strips are defective because some of the pads already have paint. FLASH NEWS - that's the way it should be. When tested with the new liquid API kits, these strips were as accurate as liquids for the same parameters. If you don't get the same results, check the expiration date on your fluid kits or buy new ones. They're great for testing between times you plan to use your fluid kit, and they're a lot less of a hassle and messy. I would still recommend testing with a liquid kit from time to time as it's a bit easier to judge the color in tubes.
