I bought this for my 3 year old chi mix (under 12lbs looks like a husky and the chihuahua has a baby). She has severe separation anxiety, I pack her to work and she is ok with it (I have a camera to look at) for about 2 hours and I think it drowned out when I left or she got bored and used to barking non stop and to cry. To be honest I didn't think this collar would work, but I tried it without the citronella and the first time it just scared her like the heck enough had happened to break the bark pattern (some barks won't pick it up, but if your dog keeps barking, he'll most likely pick it up on the second bark). The key to accuracy is a snug fit on the collar (leave enough for your fingers). It worked great and I'm sure my neighbors will like me better now. a few tugs on the collar and she lays down and whimpers (she knows whimpering doesn't help) for a few minutes, then stops. This is a great alternative to a shock collar. I would exhaust all possibilities before the shock. I've never used citronella, but it may work even better with it. I have to charge it every 2/3 of the day but my dog only carries it in the crate when I'm at work.
