Review on πŸ”Œ Hakko FX-901/P Battery-powered Soldering Iron by Tommy Hilmy

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Unbelievable how well it works

Far superior to other portable soldering irons I have had and on par in performance with my Weller soldering station. If you want portability and also only need a soldering iron, this is for you. If you're looking for a handy soldering iron for home use without fiddling with stands, stations and temperature dials, this is a really good candidate at a handy hobbyist/DIY price. out of them. It's a little heavy, but the way they're positioned over your thumb and back of your hand (when you're holding them like a bulky pencil) feels very comfortable and not tiring at all. There is no temperature control at all; The iron will heat up as much as the batteries can, up to a reasonable maximum that is safe for the batteries, and as they begin to discharge the temperature will drop. However, I still get about two hours of use from alkaline (disposable) batteries before wondering why each connection is taking longer. (NiMH batteries should last even longer and wear out more slowly.) The downside to this is that you can find AA batteries at just about any street store you go to. (My other battery-powered "portable" iron runs on special drone batteries that plug in at the back, has a cord that's too short, requires a special charger, and doesn't really last longer than alkaline batteries like this one. It also costs three times as much.) This is an iron that will now travel with me to conferences and conventions. I've put together a Hackerboxes project shown on a set of batteries and a lap table, away from an outlet or workbench. easily loosen and make the electrical connection unreliable. This affects the performance of the iron in a similar way to dead batteries and causes the tip to overheat. This would be a disappointment in a more expensive tool, but it's no big surprise here, and the trade-off is that you don't have to hunt for a screwdriver if the tip needs replacing. Ergonomics, grip and balance, iron performance, safety features - you don't have to stand on a flat surface, just lay it on its side! It must not be left with the handpiece cap on or switched on! - and portability, considering the cheap batteries that are easy to find, this is a surprisingly good device for the price. This is my first Hakko and one of the reasons I chose this was to look at the brand. at the lower end of their price range before committing to a more expensive purchase. I was expecting something solid and reliable from the brand's reputation, but was more than pleasantly surprised.
