Review on Pro 159 Spin Lube Filter by Dave Albright

Revainrating 5 out of 5

159 looks like an excellent filter. It doesn't use a bypass at the end of the dome

I researched this filter because nobody answered my Revain questions. Shown is the Wix filter. Wix black, Pro Tec white. Wix is manufactured by Pro Tec. Pro Tec filters are typically purchased by the piece from car dealerships and are not typically sold by the piece. O'reilly's sells Pro Tec filters by the box. 159 looks like an excellent filter. It doesn't use the bypass at the end of the dome found on cheaper filters. It has a silicone anti-drain check valve instead of cheap rubber that hardens with heat. Metal end caps instead of composite on the filter media and metal inner tube instead of plastic. There are 52 pleats in the filter material which compares well to the Motorcraft filter which has 50. According to my research, the 159 performs very well with the filters from Wix, Napa Gold and Motorcraft. I like it very much and in my opinion is a better filter than the overpriced Mobile 1 or K&N filter. It can be found online at a very good price, less than half the cost of Motorcraft ($5.00) purchased locally. For those who have very strict oil drain intervals, this filter will save you money (if you buy it somewhere, like RockAuto on the web). This filter is way ahead of the orange fram which is a very poor filter and very expensive. Few filters compare well to the Motorcraft filter, which is a great filter, but this one actually performs very well. There is a video on You Tube of one of these Pro Tecs being cut open to see how well it is put together. Check it. I ordered a Pro Tec filter and will update this review after it has been serviced looking at the interior after 5,000 service miles. Many Thanks. To update. I've used 159 for my last 5 oil changes. There are no problems with the filter. I bought half a dozen and had to buy a 12 pack as I have to change my oil about every two months. With what I know about this filter I see no reason to switch brands. The Rockauto is sold out, but O'Reilly will sell if necessary. I use ProTec with non-synthetic oil. I use natural or synthetic Quaker State oil. Looking at the filler hole I can see that the engine is very clean.

Pros
  • Sturdy finish
Cons
  • Almost never
