Review on Lion Brand Yarn 601 640 Bonbons by Denise Davis

Revainrating 3 out of 5

It's not about size, it's about quality.

To be very clear, I'm not complaining about the yarn count; I am complaining about the quality of the yarn and the consistency of the product in one pack. First, the yarn in my package is fuzzy and split. This is a very thin yarn for the intended sport weight; From looks alone I'd suggest it's closer to the weight of the finger. (I noticed another review called this yarn "sock heavy" so I'm not the only one finding it flimsy.) Still, the recommended hook size is 5.5mm - for comparison, that's also the recommended hook size for red yarn . Heart Super Saver yarn which is probably 3 times thicker than this material. The needle size is only 4 mm. Usually there is no such discrepancy between recommended hook and needle sizes. Using the recommended hook is guaranteed to give you a sloppy flexible frustration. The first photo I include is part of a red strand. It's NOT fuzzy; the yarn is just fluffy. Now the mismatch problem. The second photo shows 7/8ths of my little strands (didn't think to take photos until I used red). You can see from the product photo that they are not all the same size; You can see it better in my photo. The packaging says each skein of yarn is 28 yards. Light orange is noticeably larger than the rest. The yellow didn't seem smaller, but it still had less yarn than both the red and light orange. I was able to get a nice red and light orange 6 row granny square (which was about 4.5 inches tall; see, I've been crocheting for 25 years. I'm not a beginner. It's not a fickle tension problem. It's a problem uneven amount of yarn until i ran out of yellow yarn, here's my final issue, the colors don't really match, i don't know if that's a problem in all color combos or not, but here the red and purple are quite dark and saturated .Green and blue/turquoise are lighter but still quite similar. Then inexplicably three neon colors (bright orange, yellow and pink) and another orange, almost pastel. And why two shades of orange?not red-orange or yellow - orange plus normal Orange it's neon and pastel orange A gift of the day but it doesn't meet any decent design standards or color theory.

Pros
  • 100% Acrylic

These little guys are fabulous (Hint they are small because "bonbons")

For a larger product of course it would be better for larger skeins of yarn

Colors are perfect; textures can be weird
