Review on Honeywell RRD6 Retrofit Round Damper by Jeff Sorensen

Revainrating 3 out of 5

They work well, don't last forever and need replacements when they fail.

I installed about 15 of these to make my single zone 4 controlled zones. The solution has been around for over 4 years so I want to share my feedback on these devices with both installers and homeowners. Benefits: + Depending on your existing solution, this may be the most cost-effective option for HVAC controlled zoning + Low voltage wiring is simple, no retrofit or local regulations needed + Device failure is modular so failure of one device does not affect other channels. Cons: + These are dampers driven by small motors that are in constant use, they wear out and need to be replaced at a cost of about $95 per unit. + May squeak when temperature changes affect the shape of the vents. . Please keep this in mind when installing a ceiling. You must install access doors large enough to replace these blocks. I have replaced about 4 units with my love hate over the course of 4 years due to mechanical failure. That's not much, but it will still require either the help of an HVAC contractor or confident DIY skills. But they work well with Honeywell's 4-zone controllers, wireless thermostats, etc. If I were to do this all over again, I would reconsider the overall cost of the upgrade and re-do the main HVAC ducts for less dampening. There is definitely a trade off point where servicing retrofitted equipment is more of a hassle than redesigning the original duct solution.

Pros
  • 2.5VA allows multiple dampers in one zone
Cons
  • Not bad but...
