Scanner frustration

I had problems as soon as I used the scanner with Windows 8. Coming from a technical background, I knew how to troubleshoot. I installed the software for the Canon DR-C 225 II scanner. When I try to run the scan, I get an error message that the device cannot be locked. Make sure no other app is using the 4630 device. I checked for a conflict through Device Manager and checked for a software update, but there was none. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and also removed the USB and turned off the scanner. The same error popped up. I've searched the web and the workaround is as follows: In Task Manager > Services, scroll down to Acquiring Windows Images (WIA) and disable it, then close all applications and restart your computer. This solved the problem. I've started scanning and the quality is good, but I wanted to make the text darker (since I'll be scanning 10 year old records, this is very important). The software provided on the CD does not include options to adjust the output quality. For the price of this scanner I am very disappointed in Canon. I currently use a Canon printer and digital camera, both are excellent. I paid $100 for the printer and bought it through Revain - it has tons of features including copying, scanning etc, plus the ability to correct text and other features. After paying almost $400 for this scanner I thought it would be top notch.
