Review on HFS Pipe Threading Ratchet Handle by Josh Reynolds

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Worth the $32 I paid for it, great for small crafts.

I just used a die and pipe wrench to screw in some 2" plugs and it worked fine. grooves) with saws so that it works with short plugs; You need a full 3" tube to use the die like this, which is overkill for a 1/2" die (most tube threaders require at least 3" or more, this is not uncommon). I used coconut oil as a lube and it got the job done with no damage to the teeth. The resulting thread is fine and does not leak. In case anyone else tries to thread the short plugs: I originally intended to reverse the 4 punch knives and cut the threads through the other side of the punch but they are on the same plane. at a special angle and turning over spoils everything. In addition, it is impossible to feed it straight through the pipe in this way, even with threads already cut. The good news is that the bits are numbered 1 through 4 and you can cannibalize other dice if you break prongs on one (you'll need an object already threaded to put the dice on to realign the bits ). So if it worked, why 4 stars? Well, the ratchet handle isn't exactly top-notch. It has a two-piece handle, which is fine if you're actually going to use it in tight spaces, but the ratchet detailing is very crude, so you probably won't be able to get the ratchet to work in tight spaces at all. There is a metal wire that should snap into the grooves on the dies to keep them from falling out; instead, inserting the die becomes more difficult as the wire slips out of the slot in the handle and jams the die. Even when it snaps into the grooves on the die, it doesn't hold up that well. I'll probably never use it because I prefer my pipe wrench. The dies themselves are not very good and the quality control is questionable. The 3/4" won't fit over the pipe because of a piece of skin stuck in the area of the pipe; luckily it's cheese and I was able to sharpen it in seconds. The 1/2" cutters didn't fit in place. straight out of the box but I fixed it easily by slipping it onto a tube that was already threaded to get them back in place.

Pros
  • Ratchet head for easy threading
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
