Awesome laptop stand with one glaring problem

For the most part, this is an awesome laptop stand. It is well designed, stylish and functional. It holds the 15-inch MacBook almost two feet above your desk, so you can work standing up when you can't type. It also folds very compactly, making it easy to store away when not in use - despite its attractive looks, you'll likely leave your laptop on it at all times. I love this stand so much I got a second one for ordered my office HOWEVER there is one glaring flaw with this stand - the connection points for both the arm and the top of the plate are secured with tiny 3mm steel hex head screws cut into the aluminum. This is problematic, since the stand has very tight hinges hold the laptop in the desired orientation. That means adjusting those hinges puts incredible pressure on the joints (secured by tiny screws cut into the aluminum). You know where this is going, don't you? After about a week of use I noticed that the top plate of my stand was loose. I went to tighten the bolts and noticed that one of them comes with a factory removed hex head, indicating poor machining tolerances. I wanted to pull the other three, and you know what? They immediately removed the aluminum they had crashed into. This effectively rendered the stand useless as there was no way to tighten the top plate to keep it from wobbling and dropping my laptop. For my second stand, I immediately took out all the screws (fortunately none of them were removed from the factory) and applied blue threadlocker to them. Then I put them back in place and tightened them down with a gentle torque somewhere between very strong and brushed aluminum. I'm assuming the same problem occurs with the second stand as well, as the 3mm screws and aluminum taps just aren't strong enough to withstand the pressure that is put on them when adjusting this stand. If you are good with tools, this stand can be fully repaired. by removing the 3mm screws, drilling and tapping the aluminum to insert a 4mm or 5mm screw and replacing the factory screws with hardened stainless steel screws. However, in its current form (har, har) this frame will not last very long with existing bolts and machining tolerances.

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Doubt it
