I am an avid headphone lover. I listened to both cheap and high-end up to 80 thousand. And in the $150-$250 class, I think Beyerdynamic's are the best deals. I like these 990s more than the 770s because of the open design. The scene seems to become limitless, the musicians are playing on the street, and not in your toilet (excuse the analogy). Positive aspects of the sound: very detailed, wide stage (wider than 600 senheisers), good soft bottom. Now about the shortcomings in the sound. Top cut ears, especially on female vocals. Someone calls it poking, someone branded sand of buyers. To comfortably listen to music, I remove 6-8 kHz on the equalizer. The earbuds stop humming, but the sound still has a sharp high-frequency flavor. The second problem with both the 770 and 990 is little attack. The space "closer-further" is worked out weakly, this can be seen on the graphs. This is especially noticeable when compared with the older models 1770 and 1990. Not to say that it is annoying, but after listening to other headphones it is noticeable. As a conclusion: the headphones are very good, a legend no matter how. Be sure to listen before buying. They may surprise you and disappoint you.
