Originally the cockatiel cage was equipped with a conventional feeder. They eat seeds, not pellets, so after peeling the seeds off the top they wouldn't notice there were still seeds on the bottom. This feeder fits into an existing built in slot and seems to work pretty well. I haven't had any problems with traffic jams. The tray sticks out just enough for my cockatiels to grab if they want to get really close and there are holes in the bottom for the cases to fall through. The wings on the sides of the tray don't seem to make it any less messy than an old mug, although my cockatiels like to burrow under it, so I don't really mind. My cockatiels waste less seed now because they actually get by with it and it's a lot easier to measure how much they're actually eating each day. All in all it was a good buy. However, you will likely need some form of seed protection if your birds like to scatter seeds.
