Review on Roman Carbide DC1842 Carbide Forstner Bit, 3/8-Inch by Noel Schmits

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great build quality, questionable cutter geometry

This looks and feels like a great forstner bit, but its cutting performance indicates it's not quite right. It seems like there's no relief on the cutting edges, resulting in hot, laborious cuts. The centering point has issues- it's sharp, but doesn't stay centered as well as other HSS bits in a similar price point and emerges from its hole with wood fibers wrapped around it. This seems like an indication that it's not cutting right. Holes cut using this bit show signs of the bit wandering, leaving an irregular wall in the hole. The overall dimension this bit drills is basically correct, it just doesn't do a great job of it. The carbide is a bit of a liability here actually- if this bit was HSS, you could correct lots of its issues at the grinder.

Pros
  • Time-saving: Thanks to its carbide-tipped design, this Forstner bit requires minimal effort and time to drill highly precise holes, allowing you to complete your woodworking tasks much faster and with improved accuracy
Cons
  • The product may not be as reliable as other Forstner bits
