I ordered one of these because it needed to be expanded to 12 inches. At the same time I ordered a wedge from another manufacturer that expands to 7.5 inches. I did this because I wanted my husband to recover from open heart surgery. The 7.5 inch wedge expanded within 5 minutes of unboxing. After a week this extended 12" POS is still flatter than the smaller wedge pad I bought and has retained its curved shape thanks to the way it was vacuum sealed. It vacuumed so thoroughly I almost had to cut open the plastic bag it came in to get it out. These wedges were delivered at the same time. The smaller one (another manufacturer) expanded almost immediately. After a full week, this 12 inch wedge is still flat and curved. It should expand within 24 hours. I'm not sure if it will ever fully expand. I AM DELIGHTED. Waste $$$
