As I have discovered in hindsight, this sensor requires you to use the supplied paper chart or values printed on the sensor that needs to be converted if you need fractions. The instrument only measures up to 1/4" (example 3"). Let's go back to the ruler for a thicker panel. The numbers attached to the sensor are low-contrast and difficult to read in low light conditions. If your measurements are generally at least 1/4 inch, do not buy. If you don't have other charts to convert to fractions, don't buy them. In my case it's just so much junk in the box.
