As I have discovered in hindsight, this sensor requires you to use the supplied paper chart or values printed on the sensor that needs to be converted if you need fractions. The instrument only measures up to 1/4" (example 3"). Let's go back to the ruler for a thicker panel. The numbers attached to the sensor are low-contrast and difficult to read in low light conditions. If your measurements are generally at least 1/4 inch, do not buy. Having never bought one of these gauges before, I figured that all of these round gauges were the same, so I just looked for the cheapest one and ordered it. However, when I first opened the envelope and pulled it out after it arrived, I saw that many of the numbers were scratched or half missing and there were still burrs around the edges of all the slots.
