Decent tool - good value for money

This tool is a lot cheaper than brand name tools but you get what you pay for when you buy good ones for everyday use, for a weekend warrior this is your tool. This particular tool with the supplied gasket will not fit properly on a 5.3 liter Vortec truck engine. I've found that removing the spacer and placing the backing plate on top of the valve cover boss (stud) allows for proper alignment, but be careful not to tighten the bolts in the rocker arm threads by simply hand tightening, perhaps adjusting a bit after compressing everything what was needed. The installation process requires a bit of prying to keep the springs centered on the valve stems, use a long thin screwdriver between the spring and the pressure plate, do not pry between the pressure plate and the tool base or you will bend the pressure plate, sometimes I had to use a small pry bar to get the required LEVER. I also found that aligning and adjusting the springs as often as needed early in the compression process to keep them centered on the valve stem was very helpful. Don't just drop the tool and fully compress the spring, pay a lot of attention to the center of the valve stem. After full compression you will likely have more play at the top of the spring. This allows you to lower half of the holder. Here you will need to gently pry between the spring and pressure plate to center the valve, you should be able to use your fingernail to turn half of the mating part down by gently prying and leaving room to slide the other half of the counterpart, at least almost up to the locking groove if not quite . BTW, if it doesn't quite fit the groove, a long hit and light to medium tap with a hammer can set the retainer, you can also make small adjustments to the base plate screws, but don't over-tighten them. Once you figured out these tricks, the installation was easy, all you need is patience. Two last things. 1) Use the compressed air method, I've tried the TDC method and it can be done, but getting the wire into the spark plug hole isn't as easy as it sounds, especially on cylinder number 8 2) Lubricate the retainers , this not only helps them hold on, but also helps them turn more easily when trying to get the other half back in place.

Pros
  • *Springs not included. First read the instructions in the packaging. Tips: Adding lubricant works more perfectly. It is not recommended to buy cheaper analogues that will not last long. Thanks very much!
Cons
  • Cord is shorter than other picks
