I had a standard incandescent dimmer. This caused my fan to hum loudly. I installed this correct dimmer and now the fan is much quieter (and probably safer in terms of durability and fire safety). It has three speeds and they are arranged in a simple "low-mid-high" slider. Much better than the spinning version that requires you to guess what fan speed you're at. They are designed for fans without a tension chain for adjusting the fan speed (those who can better adjust the speed on the fan). I use it with this Westinghouse 7861400 56" Industrial 3-Blade Ball Mounted Brushed Nickel Ceiling Fan.
