This was my first chisel and the overall quality seems great. After many hours of studying slotting machines and chisels. I felt like I made good choices for both. I bought a Power Magic Slotter, this chisel and a matching set of 4 (1/4" - 1/2"). The first thing I did was lightly sharpen the inside with a thin taper and sharpen the outside with as sharp an edge as possible. The square sides were sharp enough to cut fingers when I finished with the 6000 grit waterstone. The tips were extremely sharp, as were the rest of the cutting edges. I was very confident of how sharp I could get the chisel. After several test cuts, which had horrible tears at each cut even with fresh lining, and nearly 50 cuts into a 1 3/4 inch square cherry (halfway up each side), I was quite disappointed in the quality of the cut. The cuts looked like I'd taken a chisel and run a sharp edge across a rough stone. The wood split with every cut. I've tried adjusting everything, distance between drill and bit, feed rate/pressure, different lubes including dry and wet. I made sure the chips were discarded and not clogged. No problems from a set of 4 pieces. I sharpened the same and was able to easily get perfect grooves from the first and last dives.
