Better positioning than suction but loses grip after a year or so

UPDATE: I have purchased several of these products over the past few years. The reason for the many purchases is that it's a good concept that puts the GPS in a much better position than the suction cup windshield mount that comes with the Garmin GPS, but that vent mount only lasts 1-2 years. Over time, due to warm air from the deflector or generally high temperatures in the car in summer, the plastic in the gripping arms will soften and the arms will move apart under the weight of the GPS. At this point there isn't enough grip and the GPS falls out of the opening every time you turn or ride over a bump. I've tried removing the mount, heating the gripper arms with a hair dryer, bending them back to their original position, and then letting them cool in their original position. It worked, but they reopened a season later, much faster than the original spread. So, great design and I love it so much I've resigned myself to buying a new one every 1-2 years (depending on whether I want to use the blow dryer trick to extend the life) but I wish them would have used it lasted. ORIGINAL REVIEW: This is a great idea, but it all depends on the details of your vents. On my Toyota, the slant of the vents made it difficult to get a good angle. Because the vents are designed to rotate easily, the GPS would slide, making it difficult to use. Last but not least, the GPS blocked the flow of air out of the vent, which is of course the rider's main vent (and I missed it a lot during the summer heat). Still, I like the convenience of having a GPS. in the same vertical plane as my radio and other controls, fairly high above the windshield. The vent mount allows me to operate the GPS as easily as I would a radio instead of bending down to reach the windshield mount. Also, the GPS is much less visible from the outside (yes, I had my GPS stolen from the windshield before when my daughter forgot to lock the car). I wish this vent mount would keep the GPS from wobbling as much, but the convenience of the dashboard's position outweighs the wobble factor for me. The device is very cheap, so the experiment is inexpensive, and I can easily switch back (I've already tried removing the bracket from the vents and it comes off easily).

Pros
  • Slim design
Cons
  • Has issues
