This is what I need, at least for my 2003 Toyota Matrix (see my review of another model of portable GPS mount). The clips open wide enough to slide over the wide slats of my car's air vent. The fit is very tight with no vibration or movement even when riding on bumpy roads. It's really an alternative to the GPS mounts that are mounted on the dashboard. When I bought my Nuvi I accidentally discovered this mount - wow, I'm glad. I wanted something to use temporarily so I can keep using my TomTom while I evaluate Nuvi. I wasn't expecting much for the price but I figured if it had run for a week it would have served its purpose. I was surprised, amazed and impressed by how well it works on my '04 Camry - for the price it's amazing. . Evaluation is complete, I have now moved the TomTom to a second device and expect it to be a permanent Nuvi mount.

Downgraded to 3 stars for writing the review below. The plastic clips that attach to the vents are so loose that the device falls out as soon as I put the Nuvi on. I would give this one 0 stars, but I was able to fix it by threading a black zip tie through a slot in the block and around the air vent. UPDATE: I have purchased several of these products over the past few years. The reason for the many purchases is that it's a good concept that puts the GPS in a much better position than the suction cup windshield mount that comes with the Garmin GPS, but that vent mount only lasts 1-2 years. Over time, due to warm air from the deflector or generally high temperatures in the car in summer, the plastic in the gripping arms will soften and the arms will move apart under the weight of the GPS. The Arkon GN047 Detachable Swivel Air Vent Mount for Garmin Nuvi and Garmin StreetPilot is a great little device. I was considering getting one of these friction dash mounts but am glad I went for these instead. It takes a bit of effort to turn the vents on and off at first, but loosens up a bit after a few uses. Or maybe just my fingers are getting stronger or my technique is getting better.
