Great gadget, best car mount

The Arkon GN047 Detachable Swivel Air Vent Mount for Garmin Nuvi and Garmin StreetPilot is a great little device. I was considering getting one of these friction dash mounts but am glad I went for these instead. It takes a bit of effort to turn the vents on and off at first, but loosens up a bit after a few uses. Or maybe just my fingers are getting stronger or my technique is getting better. Anyway, turning it on and off after just a week is no problem. I like that the GPS is slightly below the windshield so I have an unobstructed view. I'd rather listen to instructions than look at a screen, so having nothing to cover the windshield is ideal for me. If you find yourself staring at the GPS screen a lot, this might not be the device for you. It's a bit low and you can't look at the road and the screen at the same time. It's hard on the eyes so you'll tend to ignore a thing or two, preferably GPS! I love that this thing fits into my console so easily and leaves no trace of GPS in the car. Even when you park for the first time, someone might notice that you're spending a little more time in the car (while packing the GPS), but they won't see the GPS on the dash or that you took it off to tuck it under the trunk. Seat like people with dash mounts that don't fit consoles. Nobody outside your car will ever see your GPS unless they stick their head out your window. It fits snugly in my vents and I hope it stays that way for a long time. This means you don't have to worry about the mount coming loose if you suddenly snap, which is another problem people report with friction mounts. Easy to transport from car to car. It takes less than a minute to enter or exit the vent. It even fits in the bottom of my fairly wide air vent (HHR) which has an extra grommet for the handles to attach. It's definitely my go-to, unless I get to the point where I'm really missing out by avoiding looking at the screen while driving. When that happens, I'll probably have to switch to the dashboard's upper friction mounts, which bring the GPS in your line of sight to the road ahead. But then I would also get more glare on the screen if I wasn't in the sun. Hopefully this is a permanent solution for me and I won't miss the step-by-step visuals.

Pros
  • Everything great!
Cons
  • Poorly Thoughtful
