Not ready for prime time Mac

I have been scanning receipts, invoices and documents using the Brother Multifunction Center on a Windows computer for several years. About a year ago I decided to quit Microsoft and was hooked on the Neatworks software and Neat scanner. I was particularly pleased with the software that allows me to catalog and store documents. I bought the Neatworks product for Mac. I was very disappointed with this, although I now seem to be firmly attached to the technology, as it would be difficult to transfer everything to another product. Here are the problems I encountered: Scanner hardware problems: - Although the scanner is only about a year old, it is starting to have problems with the mechanical paper feed. There are certain types of paper that it won't scan unless I force it to. After scanning a direct feed receipt, a normal scan often shows a gray stripe across the width of the receipt in the middle. . To do this, the scanner must be recalibrated. It just happened again, which is what prompted me to write this admittedly scathing review. Software Issues: - When launching the software, I am usually asked that there is a "problem with the scanner driver" and that there is no driver for your Neat Scanner. Date and needs to be updated for this operating system. You may be able to fix it by reinstalling NeatWorks." I have the latest Neatworks software so this is particularly annoying. I am using OS 10.7.3 (Lion) so this could be part of the problem. I don't remember This was a problem before I upgraded to Lion. This has been going on for 6 months or more so the company should have fixed it by now. Often the scanner does not respond after using the USB cable for a while and then plugging it back in. Ease of use/other issues: - folders can contain contacts, documents OR receipts - but a folder cannot contain more than one type - if you want to put a receipt in a folder with documents, the receipt needs to be converted into a document. not I think , but it's common for me to have folders that contain all three types of items, for example a customer folder. When you create subfolders, you often have to create a subfolder in the root directory and then move it to the correct parent folder, even if the parent folder is selected when the new folder is created. For some reason the folders are sorted by creation date. I haven't found a way to sort the folders alphabetically, which is desirable if you have a lot of folders. Files, even in grayscale, appear very large when scanned at low resolution (often >5MB and often 20-25MB). I often have to open a document in Adobe and shrink it before emailing it. My recommendation is that if you're looking for a document management system and scanner on a Mac, look elsewhere.

Pros
  • Turn paper into business information
Cons
  • Something different
