great idea, with some problems

I bought a butane soldering iron and this thing struck me as amazing. However, it was not without problems. In summary: Advantages: - Very small. It is really portable and can be easily placed anywhere. No cables and no location restrictions. The supplied cap protects the handpiece when it is stored in tool boxes, among other things. Snap tight. (This is clear acrylic, not white as pictured) - Piezo igniter - no lighter required to light the torch! I wonder why others don't do the same. It makes so much sense - It stands by itself rather than requiring a stand or the usual horizontal placement of other butane irons, which tends to damage the surface from heat. It's hot enough to solder - Lasts a long time - Relatively cheap but doesn't feel cheap. to the next problem: - The tip is relatively difficult to find. Does only Weller seem to supply this 1.6mm size? Postage is not cheap. The flashlight is unstable. When the soldering tip is removed, the metal mesh elements will start to burn by themselves, killing the blue flame and turning red with heat. Using the piezo igniter sometimes returns a blue flame. I suspect this issue is related to the purity/pressure of the butane rather than the device itself. I don't know if this has anything to do with the quality of the butane (Ronson), but it doesn't seem to be the case. big difference in heat output or flame with butane setting. It's fully functional on the lowest settings and maybe a little zippy on the highest. - Contrary to what is stated in the description here, there is no window to display the butane gas level. I had no idea where the recommended 3/4 fill was. It's a great tool, but a soldering iron is only as good as its tip. A strange, non-binding, oxidized tip seemed to poop on the packaging. Due to the burner's somewhat unreliable operation alongside other lacking claims (like the lack of a butane window), it leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Only as a soldering iron though and if you have access to spare tips it works well in a very portable and thoughtful package.

Pros
  • Peak temp: 750 deg f - 900 deg f
Cons
  • There are more interesting options.
