i have been using them for our washing machine (and similar with our new toilets) for over 5 years. New washing machines tend to cause water hammer (they say, of course, that this is due to the high water pressure). No matter where the fault lies, water hammer absorbers are needed. Without them, you will have to take a loud knock. and wonder how much damage is being done to your pipes. So, here's the thing: They work REALLY WELL. But at least in our house, they usually only last a few years. It's a pain because they're not cheap and they're (a little) a hassle to replace. We probably get about 2000 loads of laundry from them. One thing I will try is to uninstall and reinstall the 'broken' one - just in case it fixes the problem. UPDATE: I tried it and it helped a little, but not enough - I replaced it. But if one of them fails, it's always worth removing and reinstalling (giving the air a chance to get back where it's supposed to be).
