Slightly scratchy at first. I did about twenty eight and made a few turns of the pen on 8000 grit (1 micron) polishing paper. That's all it took. Now it's smooth as butter. It is able to create lines of two different thicknesses: thin when the pen is moved horizontally, and about twice as thick when the pen is moved up or down. A cropped tip can really add flair to your drawing and writing. Get one.
