Solving Cable Modem Problems

I have xfinity cable internet in an old building where the cabling may not be optimal. I installed an Arris BDA-42-4-AR-R to replace a passive cable splitter between a Tivo XL4 and an Arris SB6141 cable modem. I went from daily modem shutdowns and reboots to a week's uptime. Used to get T4 errors in modem logs that cause the modem to lose connection and reboot. Now there is only an occasional recoverable T3 error. This is important because I need reliable internet to work from home. I considered upgrading to a newer modem, but this device solved my problems for a lot less money. (From what I've read, a DOCSIS 3.1 modem wouldn't solve the upstream problem anyway.) I also attached 75 ohm terminations to all unused cable outlets on the unit and around the house. It gets a little warm (around 105 F) so give it some room to allow air to circulate.

Pros
  • The BDA-42-4-AR-R is a bi-directional active return cable TV amplifier for home use. Amplifies the signal 5 times forward, 2 times back. Manufacturer Arris.
Cons
  • Suitable for
