I currently make 1 gallon batches of cider and mead. I bought a refractometer on the recommendation of friends because I ran into a common problem when using an hydrometer. For 1-gallon batches, you must take a large sample of mead to get a reading. Adding a sample to your brew can increase potential contamination, but with a 1-gallon batch, you'll lose a significant amount of your beer if you take multiple samples during fermentation. Enter the refractometer. With a refractometer, you can simply draw up a few drops of mead with disposable transfer pipettes (such as 7.0mL (100-pack)). I still recommend using a hydrometer to determine initial and final weight measurements, but now you have a great way to track the progress of your fermentation if you're adding nutrients incrementally or planning to stop the fermentation. Pros: - Great alternative to an areometer to monitor fermentation. with hard case, cleaning cloth and instructions.
