Terrible app design - look elsewhere

This thermometer works well as a temperature sensor. But to keep track of the temperature of what you're cooking on your phone, you might want to look elsewhere. Device: The device itself is very easy to set up. The display/operator unit has four numbered sensor inputs and one button. A long press of the button turns the device on or off, while a normal press turns on the backlight of the display. The display shows both the current temperature and the target temperature. It's easy to read, but there are mistakes. First, the display is tied to the Celsius scale. Changing units to Fahrenheit in the app only affects the app. While not a big deal, it makes the app and display incompatible. Even if the app is set to Fahrenheit and a target temperature is set, the temperature will be shown on the display in Celsius but with no conversion. For example, when I use the app to set a target temperature of 240 degrees Fahrenheit, the app shows something like Current: 32 degrees F Target: 240 degrees F. Obviously, she thinks I want my steak to burn. This missing unit change on the display (or missing conversion when displaying the set temperature) makes the display almost unusable. Another problem was that the device did not come with batteries. You must purchase and install your own application (3AAA). This rating is based on the Android version of the app. As of January 15, 2020, the application is numbered Grill5.0 (version 1.2.0). I'm not sure if the iPhone version has the same issues. The app has many problems. Worst of all, Android 10 and 11 require location permission to be ON ALL THE TIME, even when the app isn't being used. Since Android 9, location permission has two levels. At one level, an app can only access one location while in use. On the other hand, the app can access the phone's location at any time (e.g. when running in the background). The first time you use the app, you'll be prompted to choose a location mode. The app will only work if you select the "Anytime" option. If you choose "Only when using the app," you'll just be prompted to choose again. If you select the option "Only while using the app and do not ask again", the app will not connect to the thermometer. I don't know if this is just bad design or something more malicious. Obviously this is Chinese developed software and there have been some issues with Chinese apps requiring location permission (and then sending location information to a remote server) when the app has nothing to do with location. Here the location seems to be required for the application. to passively access the phone's Bluetooth radio. Unlike other Bluetooth devices, you don't actually need to pair the app with the thermometer. I don't know why it was designed that way. I'd rather connect my phone to the thermometer manually than passively to give it full location access even when I'm not using it. The second issue with the app is that notifications don't seem to be working. I successfully set the target temperature and was able to see the target temperature on both my phone and the thermometer display. I was also able to set the alarm and confirmed that the alarm icon was colored. But when the target temperature was reached, there were no notifications, sounds, etc. Finally, there is no notification window in the application. Typically, such applications have both the usual full-screen interface and a small persistent notification showing the current temperature. This app has no such notice. So you have to keep the app open to see the temperature.
