I have a 2.5 liter Iron Duke in my car. It was very high at idle. I found it to be open loop (as opposed to closed loop where the engine oscillates between too rich and too lean according to the car's oxygen sensor data). The open loop should only occur when I'm traveling at around 80mph (speeds where closed loop no longer applies). I have cleaned the oxygen sensor (there is only one in my car) to no avail. Then I came across the EGR. I took mine off and it didn't even need to be cleaned; he was covered in soot. So I ordered OEM EGR for my car. I unhooked my battery, put it back in, and the car didn't open up again and went another 10mpg. I will only clean a new EGR once a year or so.
