Review on ๐Ÿ”ง Precision Spoke Tension Measurement with the Park Tool TM-1: A Must-Have Tool for Bike Maintenance by Adam Jackson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

For the price there is nothing better. Calibration should be better resolved by Park

I am an obsessive wheel builder. I'm not a wheeled harp. (Tension detection with plucked tone and intuition.) So, along with Park, I also have the Wheel Fanatyk Mitutoyo, which is an amazingly amazing tool and, they say, the most accurate gauge in the world. For this review: When both tools were properly calibrated, I got nearly identical voltage readings for both tools. That's impressive considering the park is $320 LESS than the competition in this case. And the fall of the park during its use does not cause stress / disaster, like an expensive digital sensor. Warning: Park calibration is entirely dependent on the position of the set screw (shown) which changes the spring tension of the tool. Turning this screw up and down will give you completely different readings. It should now be calibrated from the factory, but I can tell you that this screw is easy to turn with your finger and has no park certification or any position indicator on it. Screw yourself to guide the user. Park needs to somehow address this issue and implement a post-sales calibration process. Wheelbuilder.com in Azusa, CA will calibrate your fleet for a fee, or you can do it yourself if you can manage to hang a known weight (275 lbs or so) on a single 14G spoke and then place the gauge on it to put. Ultimately, precise accuracy matters less than the tool's ability to provide consistent tension, ie a tight, evenly tensioned wheel with a 5kg tension error is much better than a wheel that is too soft all around, all around.
