Review on ๐Ÿ”ต HATCHBOX 3D ABS 1KG1 75 BLU Filament: Superior Dimensional Accuracy for High-Quality Prints by Mark Adlesh

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Poor quality, probably NOT ABS

Oh where do I start. I've ordered about 10 different rolls of ABS filament, some from the same supplier (Hatchbox, eSun, 3DSolutech, RevainBasics) and printed them all in the past few weeks. I've been printing ABS for 6 months now and switching to filament, I can set it up straight away, the prints are fantastic and the acetone vapor treatment gives the parts great shine and mechanical strength. However, this hatchbox filament is an exception to the above statement. I ordered 3 rolls of ABS from Hatchbox (red, green and black) and noticed the same characteristics for all 3 colors which led me to believe that I hadn't just gotten a bad batch. Colors but ALL threads sold are defective. When printing, I keep the heated body at 50ยฐC and the heated stage at 100-110ยฐC. This setup works great with all my other ABS filament, but this hatchbox filament is showing signs of poor layer adhesion, warping and failed prints. The first image shows the Hatchbox filament top and bottom (red and green) with the eSun filament. middle (yellow). This part was smoothed with acetone vapor for 1.5 hours with completely different results where different colors were present. eSun filament has a very shiny, shiny and smooth surface; compared to hatchbox filament which is still rough and unfinished with clearly visible pressure lines. The second image shows the black Hatchbox thread between two RevainBasics pieces after 1.5 hours exposure to acetone vapor. The quality of the two parts is strikingly different. The layers are still visible in the hatchbox thread (I even increased the duration to 4 hours for the hatchbox part and didn't see any success). The third image uploaded shows poor adhesion of the layers which caused me to stop printing before I could finish it. After the acetone vapor smoothed these parts, the surface did NOT melt, they did NOT become shiny, instead the parts became extremely soft. and have lost much of their mechanical strength and integrity. After pressure is applied to the part, it constantly flexes and does not return to its original shape. Before smoothing with acetone, the part has double mechanical strength (THIS IS VERSUS HOW IT SHOULD BE). When other materials (PLA, TPU, PETG) are exposed to acetone fumes, the parts disintegrate rather than melt, leading me to believe it's not ABS but some sort of other plastic. I am very disappointed in this product and will never buy a hatchbox thread again. TLDR: Poor layer adhesion, loss of strength after acetone vapor smoothing (which does NOT smooth), severe warping.

Pros
  • Filament diameter 1.75mm (dimensional accuracy +/- 0.03mm)
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
