This is the first Makita tool I've been really dissatisfied with. I read many different reviews about it before buying it and unfortunately the reviews with the best information turned out to be the bad ones it got. After the tool was shipped to me, I tested it with 1 1/4" rod on both softwood and hardwood. I made sure the depth setting was as deep as possible before beginning, then started with one piece Doug's Fir On this piece of softwood the tool worked as directed, driving each nail to the full depth, but when I tried the nail hammer on a piece of white oak the results weren't very good Five nails seemed about flush with the surface of the material to be, and then he began to set the pins very unevenly, sometimes setting them flush but in most cases leaving the pins sticking out as much as 3/16". The length of the nail used is within the manufacturer's specifications for the work and the tool failed .every nail, and until he drove the heads of the nails as deep into the hardwood as into the softwood, he continually set them to the same depth. I would not recommend the XBN01z to anyone who needs it for production purposes. It just doesn't work well enough with the variety of materials that a professional may encounter on a daily basis to be catered for. First, the balance of the tool when in use is unusual. It is very bottom heavy and if you hold the tool horizontally for any length of time it will tire much sooner than if you were to use any other tool. Very similar to a pneumatic tool with a long hose attached to it. Second, the continuous way of working works differently than its contemporaries. It runs at about the same speed as a single nail setup and doesn't offer enough speed boost to make it an option. In other words, when it's activated, the tool still has to run before it fires the nail while you're pressing on the tip. In comparison, the design of the Dewalt tool allows for rapid firing in continuous mode. Why two stars and not one? The tool is made of high quality materials and has some minor features. They just aren't worth mentioning compared to their inability to work consistently with what I consider to be standard building finishes.
