I took it and literally rang it to get rid of the excess water and then hung it out to dry. If the area you are buying this for will not be exposed to the elements I would recommend this as it is lovely. If the area will be exposed to the elements I would not recommend this mat as it will hold water. The mat I replaced does not hold water at all. I only exchanged it because we changed the colors in the listing and it no longer matched.
