Don't believe some reports about calibration being disabled

Calibration technically disabled for specific gravity? Yes, but that's on purpose. Refractometers are designed to work with clear liquids, so they must be calibrated to work with beer wort. To learn more please calibrate your google refractometer, in particular you can read the comments on the BeerSmith software and their forums. I use BeerSmith for brewing and it has a special tool just to calibrate the refractometer to convert Brix to specific gravity. After performing the calibration, it was confirmed that the specific gravity scale on the unfermented wort refractometer was accurate. That last statement is important, but it only applies to UNFERMENTED wort. Once the wort has fermented, you need to use the Brix scale and do the appropriate calculations to convert it back to specific gravity. Again, BeerSmith does this beautifully. Finally something about this refractometer. Nothing is easier to use. The first time I calibrated with distilled water (I didn't need any adjustment, everything is perfect). Then calibrate an unfermented wort whose specific gravity you know (use a hydrometer). Once the calibration is complete, a few drops on the glass are enough to give you an instant reading. The calibration process is only required once, if you don't drop it or something, you can check again. Reading couldn't be easier either, there's a light blue line across the viewer and the viewer has a focus setting to ensure you can easily read the scale.
