My son is 2 years old and weighs 30 pounds. This life jacket pushes him face first into the water where he cannot raise his head. We tried just keeping the bow at the back but it continued to do the same. We had to have him sit on our laps or on one of our legs. The jacket also kept slipping off his neck and wrinkling his face, and no matter how tight we tightened the straps, it would slip off. This made it almost impossible for him to be alone, only repeatedly forcing him to lie face down. We ended up buying a completely different style (floats on the arms) that worked 100% better. I would not recommend this to anyone with young children.
