Definitely not for outdoor use without a receiver

I'm writing this review while I'm still considering returning the device. It's a fun toy, but I'm still not sure if it's worth keeping. It was chosen because of the brighter green laser and the hope that it would be visible outdoors without a receiver. It's not like that at all. The line disappears within two feet in bright sunlight. If you could create all your layouts at dusk or at night, this might work. Anyway, the green laser has no advantage over the red laser as both disappear in the daylight. The laser is powerful enough at night or indoors. The only downside is that the laser line will experience significant divergence at distances greater than 25 feet. The line is nearly 1/8" at 25 feet and nearly 1/4" further. I suppose that's fine if you're planning landscaping and maybe even hardscape, but it may be overkill if you're relying on a laser for precise interior work or trying to determine drainage on a very flat surface. I have a green laser pointer that runs on two AAA batteries that I can see in daylight, so the laser plane color can be seen in daylight if the photon concentration is sufficient. The laser pointer also exhibits less divergence over longer distances. Perhaps laser levels could be improved if they used something like a rotating polygon mirror scanner instead of the static cone mirror they use. However, this would make them MUCH more expensive. I'm still debating the merits of the green laser version of this device. If I need a receiver and level anyway, the red laser does the same job for significantly less money.
