First of all I have to say that I bought these to display my Disney icons, not to paint. Upon first opening I noticed the product had 2 separate canvases that weren't in the best shape. One was already cracking, and one wasn't built quite like the others. The tarpaulin part was loose and when lowered the tarpaulin sagged inwards. The same canvas had some wood texture issues. Both canvases were closer to the center of the pack so take that as you like. All these canvases go well with acrylic paint, all have 2 coats of black paint, some have 3 coats. Also, they weren't painted at all. Despite the fact that the pair had obvious issues, I still used them for their intended purpose. Only time will tell if they can withstand the weight of the metal. Overall, having paid less than $2 each, I'd say they're great for beginners. However, note that there are some quality issues.
