I have just replaced four 20 year old Firex smoke alarms in my apartment with new ones that have received top marks from First Alert. Hoping to avoid the expense of hiring an electrician or handyman to do the rewiring, I ventured into using these adapters, which could plug into both the old and new plugs without having to cut the wires. The only difficulties were attaching the Firex termination and sliding the adapter into the already filled junction boxes. Suggestions: (1) Make sure in advance that each junction box can accommodate the entire adapter; otherwise you may have to cut and shorten existing wires, defeating the purpose of the adapter. (2) Make sure the connector on the end of the Firex adapter snaps into place and remains secure even after screwing on the new smoke alarm as the "clip" holding the Firex connector parts together is difficult to depress. (3) After installation, ensure that all First Alert detectors are solid green, indicating a proper connection to the 120V power supply (preferably in the dark as the green light can be very faint).
