Review on Pop & Lock Power Tailgate Lock for Toyota Tacoma (2016-2021) and Tundra (2007-2021), PL8547HD - OEM Lock Compatible by David Norwood

That's not a problem for anyone except Toyota engineers.

Toyota. Only Toyota will sell a $40,000 midsize pickup with "tech and convenience packages" that include a locking tailgate without a power lock. Luckily, the aftermarket has half the brains, and it's filling the gap. Enter PL8535, works great. Yes, I could build a cheap universal actuator for about $20-$30, but that would require drilling through the latch and tailgate to install it. This method didn't require drilling my, as mentioned, new $40,000 truck. This is the route I took, installation is pretty easy and as mentioned this is the correct kit for the 3rd gen Tacoma but for some stupid reason they don't include instructions for the 3rd gen Tacoma. There are YouTube videos here as well as other reviews detailing what you need to do. I also recommend climbing on the passenger side and going through the grommet under the passenger seat. It's pretty easy and doesn't take too long. That way it would open from the passenger door every time and not the driver's door, which made more sense to me. The drive is pretty loud because it's mounted in a hollow tailgate, but even if it weren't in a hollow tailgate, I feel like it's still a pretty loud drive. I don't think it's a bad thing, I always know when it's working properly and I'm okay with it. If you have a trunk lid, this is a must have.
